zenji is 4-year-old very shy toy poodle that i adopted 1-1/2 years ago when he was rescued from puppy mill. abby is a lively, confident 13-year-old toy poodle recently surrendered to rescue group. ahbi joined our home 2 months ago. i start their meal by handfeeding, actually spoonfeeding, some grain-free dry food with a bit of canned mixed in to make a high-motivation reward. i've been spending about 3-5 minutes twice a day on this type of click-treat training with the dogs at each feeding. (then ahbi finishes her meal with her interactive food toy, which you can see in the other video, "ahbi's dessert.") some of the click-treat training i've been doing with abby since she arrived is to help her learn that patience is rewarded and pushiness is not. in the video, you will see zenji on the left and abby on the right, except for a few seconds toward the beginning where abby jumps in front of zenji pushing him behind. abby gets so excited over food of any kind it is difficult for her to sit still literally for one second. so at this point, after two months of training, i'm rewarding her for simply sitting still without excessive whining or movement for one second. i'm also helping abby learn to share and wait for zenji to have his turn. abby has made a lot of progress, because when she first arrived she would leap in front of zenji and jump for her food. and zenji would also get so intimidated he would retreat and not even try to eat. so what you see here with both of them ...
